Joe Simmons
As a former actor and philosophy grad, I’ve always wanted to understand what makes people tick. I found my cinematic voice through a bohemian film movement in my twenties—sleeping on floors and sofas around the world and making dozens of shorts. I like to make psychological/philosophical genre films (thriller, sci-fi, horror) that aim to put the audience in the shoes of the character and show the world feels to them. After my MA at the Northern Film School, I learned how the film industry ran through work on large productions, development roles, and through producing commercials with brands like Universal Music, Nike, and Puma. I have made award-winning shorts at top BAFTA/Oscar-qualifying festivals, had work screen on Disney+, and taken part in various industry development programs and prominent creative labs. To each project I strive to bring: empathy, sensitivity, and curiosity.

TERRA, his debut feature film, marks a major milestone in his career, and 2026 is shaping up to be an exciting year, with the film selected for a top-tier U.S. film festival—signalling a significant step forward in his journey as a writer/director.
