There is a well-documented gender imbalance in the film and television industry, and women are still significantly under-represented, especially in creative and financial authority positions. This is especially true for Indigenous, Black, and women of colour. This inequity has negative implications for the sector and society. Fewer women employed as directors or writers directly correlates to more stereotypical portrayals of women. St. John's International Women's Film Festival was launched in 1989 in response to this reality with a bold vision of supporting and promoting women's creative work in screen-based industries locally and internationally.
